If you haven't used IRC before, you may need to install an IRC client. For Windows, a common IRC client is mIRC, available at http://www.mIRC.com/. For Linux, several IRC clients are available, such as irssi (http://www.irssi.org), xchat (http://www.xchat.org), and others you can find at http://freshmeat.net and other places.
